Clinical Research | Investigational Drug Section

The Investigational Drug Section (IDS) provides pharmaceutical services for:

  • Phase I investigational study treatments
  • Conventional chemotherapy treatments
  • The Director of the Investigational Drug Section, Theresa A. Mays, holds a Doctorate in Pharmacy and is a residency trained hematology / oncology clinical pharmacist, she is also Fellow of the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists and a Board Certified Oncology Pharmacist.
  • The IDS employs two additional pharmacists, both of whom hold a Doctorate in Pharmacy, as well as two certified pharmacy technicians. With a combined 40 years of experience, the IDS staff is happy to assist pharmaceutical companies in the development process of new agents, including:
      - Discussing methods to administer investigational medications
      - Providing a table referencing syringes, IV bags, and tubing used at START for compatibility testing
      - Assisting companies with obtaining syringes, IV bags, and tubing for compatibility testing

The IDS pharmacists conduct extensive medication screenings for all patients enrolling on Phase I studies to identify any potential medication interactions. In addition, they also assist physicians in providing supportive care including pain management to patients.
