START Madrid opened in 2008 and is the first of several planned global satellite collaborations. It represents the first step in our goal to keep the development of anticancer agents operating 24 hours a day.
The Madrid unit is led by Emiliano Calvo, M.D., Ph.D., Director of Clinical Research. He is joined by Ignacio Durán, M.D., Ph.D., Associate Director of Clinical Research, and Manuel Hidalgo, M.D., Ph.D., Director of the Centro Integral Oncológico Clara Campal.
START Madrid is located in the Hospital Universitario Madrid Sanchinarro, Centro Integral Oncológico Clara Campal (CIOCC). It is the first and only comprehensive cancer center in Spain to operate within a general hospital and offers the most innovative Phase I cancer clinical trials program available in Spain’s capital city of six million.
The cancer center has 28 hospital rooms, expandable to 70, plus an outpatient care room that currently cares for 150-200 new patients per month. This facility accommodates standard, as well as Radioactive Absorption, Distribution, Metabolism, and Excretion (ADME) pharmacokinetic studies.
